Illinois Cell Phone Laws
Illinois law prohibits the use of hand-held cellphones as well as texting and engaging in other electronic communications while operating a motor vehicle, and also prohibits the use of headsets while driving. Drivers who are involved in a crash related to distracted driving could face criminal penalties and incarceration. Under the law, cell phone use is only permitted:
- When using a Bluetooth headset, earpiece, or voice-activated commands

- When the vehicle is in neutral or park.

Illinois state police recommend that drivers avoid becoming distracted by:
- Limiting interactions with passengers
- Avoiding talking to anyone while driving
- Refraining from taking your eyes off the road
- Keeping both hands on the wheel at all times
The ISP recommends that drivers:
- Adjust seats, heating and cooling, stereo systems, and other in-vehicle devices before they leave or while parked
- Familiarize themselves with how their controls work to minimize distraction if they must make an adjustment on the go
- Use presets for radio and climate control or request the assistance of a passenger.
